Dry stone walls
Hammered granite
Dry stone walls use earth as a mortar. Dry stone walls can be made from slate, granite or other types of stone. Hammered granite is supplied as roughly broken blocks. The shapes vary and there is a degree of skill required to fit the stones together neatly when only earth is being used to bind them together. The picture to the right shows a dry stone wall built in Devon on the edge of Dartmoor.
Cropped granite
Cropped granite comes in much more uniform shapes and sizes and it is much easier to build a dry stone wall with than hammered granite so is recommended for DIY use.
Medium walling stone
We sell three types of slate dry stone walling stone: The solution we recommend for DIY use or where the best quality is required is our Medium Walling Stone. Stones are selected by us to have a good building face and be built 100-300mm into the wall.
Garden hedging stone
Our Garden Hedging Stone can be used where economy is important. These stones are cheaper as they have only been selected to be below 25kg in weight.
Large hedging stone
Our large hedging stone is most suited for very large dry stone walls and hedges such as for agricultural hedges. They are generally larger in size and pieces can be too large to handle without machinery or splitting.
Splitting
Another way to build a dry stone wall is for the stones to be split into narrower pieces and stacked vertically. The best stone to use for this purpose is our Small Walling Stone, although Medium Walling stone can also be used, but will require more splitting on site.
Small walling stone
Alternatively the picture below shows a retaining wall which has been constructed using a gabion (wire mesh) basket that has been filled with rubble and then faced with Small Walling Stone.

Medium walling stone (loose)
Medium walling stone is suitable for use to construct traditional slate dry stone walls and hedges or for the construction of masonry walls with mortar. The slate stones are hand selected from the quarry and are not cut to size. They come in random sizes and are selected to ensure they have a building face. This stunning granite walling stone - hammered comes from our Caradon Quarry on Bodmin Moor and is suitable for building either masonry walls or dry stone walls. The stone is in random shapes, the bed depth of the stones vary. The bed depth can be up to 450mm roughly. The price is for a bagged tonne

Small walling stone (loose)
Our hand selected small walling stone is suitable for constructing masonry walls with mortar. Typically this Cornish stone would be used to face a wall that had been constructed from concrete blocks. It can also be used as facing stone for use in gabion baskets. These small walling stones are hand selected from Lantoom Quarry and are not cut to size. This gives a more random and traditional look compared to walls built from our sawn stone products.
