Rustic stone
Traditional
Rustic stone is a traditional building material. Stone that has a natural building face, rather than being sawn is commonly referred to as rustic stone. Lantoom Quarry in Cornwall is a source of Cornish rustic stone. The quarry has been in existence for over 100 years and operated by the current owners since 1964.
Formed by nature
Rustic stone has been used in Cornwall and Devon for the construction of homes and other buildings for thousands of years. The term ‘rustic stone’ can be applied to any type of stone which is built so the face of the stone (i.e. the part you see when you look at a wall) is that formed by nature.
Distinct
However it is most commonly used to describe slate stone, particularly in Cornwall and Devon; distinct from other types of stone such as granite, limestone and sandstone. Rustic stone is not a geological term, but it is a familiar name in common usage. "Cornish stone" and "Devon stone" are also synonymous with rustic stone. Mixture of colours
Typically the face of the stone is a mixture of colours, while the inside of the stone is grey. The mixture varies from quarry to quarry (and even within quarries) including brown, red, grey and bronze colours. The colour comes from minerals which have precipitated out of water and deposited on the natural surface of cracks in the rock.

This is blue grey natural face stone. The building face of this walling stone is the blue grey natural face and the bed depth is between 100mm - 150mm. This is our genuine Cornish crazy paving. The price listed is per pallet. The price is per pallet of stone, exclusive of VAT. The approximate coverage for 1 pallet of crazy paving is 12.5m2. Rustic crazy paving is slightly weaker than the blue grey variant, and should therefore be used in 'low pedestrian traffic' areas. Learn More -
Rustic face sawn stone 150mm (palletised)
This is beautiful Cornish stone from Lantoom Quarry. The building face of the stone is the brown natural face and the back face of the stone is sawn to give a 150mm (nominal) bed depth. The stone is suitable for both traditional and contemporary designs and can be used for interior and exterior walls. The advantage of using a 150mm bed depth stone compared to a 100mm bed depth stone is that as the stones are generally larger, the average length and depth of the face of each stone will be larger. This is our most popular building stone material and has been used in a wide range of projects to give a quality finish to a building project. Small walling stone (bagged)
Small walling stone is suitable for use to construct masonry walls with mortar. Typically the stone would be used to face a wall that had been constructed from concrete blocks. It can also be used as facing stone for use in gabion baskets. The stones are hand selected from the quarry and are not cut to size. This gives a more random and traditional look compared to walls built from our sawn stone products. They come in random sizes and are selected to ensure they have a building face. Our hand selected small walling stone is suitable for constructing masonry walls with mortar. Typically this Cornish stone would be used to face a wall that had been constructed from concrete blocks. This gives a more random and traditional look compared to walls built from our sawn stone products.
